I have heard about these, but I havent’ seen them yet (probably because I am dieting, and not eating any sugar). But I was researching for a newsletter article and found a very nice blog post by BeFreeForMe where they tried each of the mixes and described them in detail! What a wonderful blog post! Check it out

Is it just me, or do you find that an alarming number of restaurant managers and line cooks think “white” flour is somehow not a wheat product? I have had more than a few conversations about just where “white” flour comes from…..(hint:wheat). Do you ever feel like a scientist or food biologist? I catch myself trying to bite my tongue (because I don’t want to get special sauce in my food) when people tell me their bread is NOT wheat, but rather white. Have you ever seen fields of white?
I have heard rumors and tweets (follow me on twitter, GFTIFF) about something gluten free coming to Starbucks….well, it’s here!!!
The Gluten-Free Valencia Cake was rolled out this week. It is a small (think cupcake without the round top) pastry, orange flavored, with sliced almonds on top. The texture is fantastic! I am surprised at the flavor, but it is good, especially for a morning pastry (I would prefer chocolate, but chocolate feels guilty in the morning, but orange seems breakfast-like). It is moist and soft, with a great texture that holds up well to being held and torn apart without leaving a ton of crumbs everywhere. I am very impressed!
The Starbucks on the way to work only gets 4 of the Valencia cakes a day. He said the more people buy the more they will get. I got two for breakfast today. If you are going out of your way to pick one up you might want to call first and make sure they have one left. Let me know what you guys think!
I really love these Simply Boulder sauces! They have wonderful flavor, and great, natural ingredients. King Soopers in the area are carrying them. The honey mustard flavor is great on chicken and salad. I don’t like teriyaki flavor myself, but my husband does, and he really likes the Simply Boulder flavor Truly Teriyaki. I just tried the Zesty Pineapple and that is my new favorite! The flavor is amazing! It is like a sweet and sour sauce with a kick! These are great for marinades, dipping sauces, and dressings! Check out the website, www.SimplyBoulder.com
Nordstrom’s in house cafe’ at the Flatirons Mall in Broomfield, CO is now carrying Udi’s gluten free muffins. They run out fast, which is a good thing if you want to encourage more places to have gluten free options!
I just tried another flavor of Rice Works Crisps, Parmesan and Sun Dried Tomato. They are good, but the flavor isn’t as strong as the other Rice Works crisps I tried (Salsa Fresca). If you like a more subtle flavor then this is it! And I LOVE that I can buy them at Walmart. Anytime I can get my GF food while buying hair dye and socks I am happy!
So…I am not the brightest computer chick, so I am not sure if this is going to work. If not, please let me know. Someone asked for a way to get my post updates via email. Hopefully this will do the trick. Just follow the link below, enter your email address, and you will be sent an email when I post a new blog (hopefully)…..
The Rio is famous for their margaritas. I finally made a trip to try them this week, and discovered they also have a gluten free menu! I didn’t know that! I enjoyed a strawberry margarita, chips and chile con queso, and the taco pollo with rice and black beans. The queso was really good. The taco was a tad bland, but I mixed the rice and beans with each bite and it was ok.
The bar was packed, so we wanted to sit at a table, but you have to order food. I was really surprised when I asked if they had a GF menu and the hostess handed me one. I haven’t had queso in so long, since it seems like most places use flour to thicken or spices that are not GF. I know I will be going back if only for the margartias and chips and queso!
