Alamo Celiac Article- My Own Meals prepackaged GF meals

My Own Meals ®

Have you ever wanted a “pre-packaged” meal that you can take with you and pop in a work, hotel, or gas station microwave? If so, then I have news! I read about a website, ®and decided to check them out. They have a link on the left hand side of the page titled “Special Diets.” The first paragraph is about Celiac and wheat/gluten free foods!!

I ordered the “Beef Stew”, “Chicken & Black Beans”, and “My Kind of Chicken ®.” They come in boxes, like frozen dinners, but do not have to be frozen! They are already cooked, ready to eat, and just need to be heated! Most have a shelf life of up to 2 years! I was so impressed!

Of the 5 that are gluten-free, I ordered 3 different dishes. When ordering from ®, the meals come in “cases” of 12, one of the down sides of the service, so I didn’t want to order all 5 gluten free flavors. But I just found out that you can also order individual meals from other websites, including, and

The cheapest (per meal) is ® (at $5.00 per meal), but at a minimum of 1 case, which includes 12 meals per case, and each case costing $ 60.00 (plus shipping), that is a big chunk of change! So, for individual meals, you are better off at one of the other websites. Amazon charges a dollar more per meal, but that is still much cheaper than ordering a minimum of 12 meals! Gluten charges only 19 cents more for individual meals! In my opinion, $5.19 is not a bad price for a gluten-free, no freezing, no refrigerating, yummy meal! And ordering individual meals is a great way to see which ones you like before ordering in bulk. (Wish I would have shopped around before my order!)

Before your purchase, I recommend checking the My Own Meals® website for all of the ingredient information and any questions about the meals. If you have other dietary concerns besides gluten, they offer several “special diet” meals. There are 5 gluten free meals, 8 dairy free, ALL of them are soy free, ALL are MSG free, 9 are peanut free, 5 are egg free, and they have ingredients lists for all of the dishes so you can look for other food allergies/intolerances. Did I mention they were Kosher?

I ordered the “Chicken & Black Beans.” This meal has chunks of chicken, vegetables, beans, and potatoes. This is the most flavorful of the ones that I ordered. I like the combination of veggies; including corn, beans, tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes.

I also ordered the “Beef Stew.” The stew includes beef, vegetables (cabbage, zucchini, chickpeas, carrots, celery, peppers), and potatoes. The sauce is a kind of gravy, thickened with cornstarch. And with the calories numbering only 330, it is not only gluten free, but also a low calorie meal!

The last flavor that I ordered was “My Own Chicken” ®. This meal includes chunks of chicken, brown rice, potatoes, and peas. I admit, I am not crazy about this sauce, so I add salt and pepper. I think they were going for a creamy, soupy flavor, and it just isn’t my favorite. But I did eat it while traveling and unable to find a safe meal. If you like a soup-type of rice dish, then you might like this one.

All of the meals that I ordered are 360 calories or less. They are great for work lunches, as they do not need to be frozen or refrigerated. They also have a great shelf life. I used them when we drove to Arizona and spent whole days in the car. I can only take so many hamburger patties at fast food places! These were great options!

I was very pleased with these meals, and still have several sitting on a book shelf (since they don’t need to be refrigerated, and I am quickly running out of pantry space with all of my great gluten-free finds!). If you are looking for a portable, easy, tasty meal that is gluten-free, then check out My Own Meals ®.
